Network of Excellence
Monet
was a European Network of Excellence in Model Based Systems
and Qualitative Reasoning (MBS & QR). The Project will
bring together experts in these fields from Academia and Industry
in order to realise the potential of this area. The primary
aim being to bring these technologies to the point where they
are of use to Industry and therefore forward the competitiveness
of the joint economies of Europe.
The methods
used in MBS & QR are applicable to many and diverse areas
of Research and Industry. Some applications are more developed
than others; some are already in commercial use. The Project
aim was to further the use of these technologies and then
apply the lessons learned in their development to furthering
the areas that are not quite so developed.
MONET1
The first
MONET Project was run from 1997 until the end of 2000. MONET
was set the task of forging links between Centres of Excellence
in MBS & QR and to further develop this field of study.
To this end MONET1 was extremely successful. At its close
it had a total membership of 84 organisations and had established
itself as a world leading name in MBS & QR.
Birth
of MONET2
A Proposal
for a second MONET Project was submitted towards the end of
MONET1 and we received the final feedback in November 2000.
The response from the Commission indicated that the Project
would be too expensive and the proposal required reworking.
This re-write took place in January and February of 2001 and
was finished in mid March and re-submitted. Considerations
were received from the Commission during July and they requested
the final version by September. Chris Price and George Coghill
discussed the Proposal at length with Knud Lonsted (our new
Commission Project Officer) in August before finally submitting
the proposal, which was agreed.
MONET2
MONET2
continued where MONET1 left off and set to work in putting
the Network of Excellence that was forged in MONET1 to good
use. In order to achieve yet greater success the MONET Executive
Board decided to narrowly focus the remit of MONET2 in order
to achieve the greatest results. Thus four fields were chosen
for representation within the Project Scope, these areas were;
Automotive
Bio-Medical
Education and
Training
Fault Detection and Diagnosis
These
areas of expertise became the four dedicated Task Groups that
formed the core of the MONET2 Work Programme and they and
the Co-ordinating Node worked towards the Project goals and
deliverables.
Co-ordinating
Node
The MONET2
Project was co-ordinated from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
The MONET2 Steering Committee,
(which included the Task
Group Leaders, Industrial Experts and the
Co-ordinating Node) made all strategic decisions, but
the day to day running was done from Aberystwyth.
